England cricket legend Graham Thorpe has sadly taken his own life, according to a statement from his family.
The England and Wales Cricket Board announced Thorpe’s death on August 5 at 55. He was celebrated as one of the nation’s greatest Test players, having played 100 Test matches and 82 one-day internationals.
In an interview with The Times, Thorpe’s wife Amanda shared that he had struggled with depression and anxiety for years. “Even though he had a wife and two daughters he loved deeply, he couldn’t overcome his issues,” she said. “He was very unwell recently and believed we would be better off without him. We are heartbroken that he acted on those thoughts and took his own life.”
Thorpe’s daughter Kitty added that the family chose to talk publicly regarding his mental health struggles. “We are not ashamed to discuss it,” she said. “There’s nothing to hide, and it shouldn’t be seen as a stigma.”
